Assignment #1

Suspense - a state of uncertainty or the growing excitement felt while waiting a climax of a play.
Foreshadowing - to indicate or suggest beforehand that something is going to happen.

Four examples of suspense:
1." 'What are they like? Do tell me.' Lombard thought: 'Awkwrd, this-am I supposed to have met them or no?' " p20
2."But there was no house visible, only the boldly silhouetted rock with its faint resemblance to a giant Indian's head. There was something
sinister about it. She shivered faintly." p22
3.General McCarther said: " 'Ha, dilightful spot!' But he felt uneasy. Damned odd sort of place." p27
4."Odd creature (Mrs. Rogers), she looked scared to death." p35

Four examples of foreshadowing:
1."It was as though the mention of this host and hostess had a curiously paralyzing effect upon the guests." p23
2."Anthonly Martson seemed to be something more than mortal. Afterwards, more than one of those present remembered that moment." p24
3."One little Indian boy left all alone; he went and hanged himself and then there were none." p31
4."An island was a world of its own. A world, perhaps, from which you might never return." p33

"And Then There were None" is a book that has lots of suspense and forshadowing. I chose these examples of suspense because Christie makes the reader aware that the house has a sinister feel to it and bad things might happend in it. Because the Owens are not on the island when the guests arrive, that shows suspense because it is very odd that the people who do the inviting are not there when the guests arrive. With Mrs. Rogers looking scared and acting so strange, this shows the reader suspense because she is acting out of sorts. The examples of foreshadowing I chose indicate bad things that might happen in the future. The poem explains how each guest is going to die. When the host and hostess are mentioned paralyzing the guests, this lets the reader know the host and hostess do not have the guests come to the island for good reasons. With the guests remembering back to Anthony Martson seeming mortal shows that he might be one of the first to die. This will be a great book with all of the suspense and foreshadowing.
